Caernarfon Castle in 1988, seen from the Slate Quay with the vast waterfront walls and polygonal towers rising directly above the harbour-side car park. This is a good late-20th-century view of how closely the medieval fortress still dominated the working edge of the town, with moored boats at left, parked cars in the foreground and the old quay area pressed hard against the castle walls. The pale blue Toyota Carina and the Vauxhall Astramax van behind it help fix the date, while the buses, scaffolding and roadside signs at right show the everyday commercial life gathered beneath one of Wales’s greatest castles. Built from 1283 as part of Edward I’s new walled town and quay, Caernarfon remained unusually tied to its waterfront setting, and this photograph catches that contrast well: a thirteenth-century fortress looming over an ordinary 1980s harbour scene.
