This authentic 1970s colour photograph, captured in 1972, documents the historic heart of Monmouth in Southeast Wales. The archival image features Agincourt Square, showing the Shire Hall with its iconic Bath stone facade and the statue of Henry V. To the right, the timber-framed Kings Head Hotel and the white-walled Punch House public house are prominent landmarks of the square. A second view looking down into the square shows the prominent spire of St Mary’s Priory Church rising above the local businesses, including the Popin-Jay and the offices of Coles, Knapp & Kennedy auctioneers. Pedestrians in typical 1970s attire are seen walking along the pavements of the old market town. This factual record preserves the Georgian and Victorian architectural heritage and the everyday urban atmosphere of Monmouth as it appeared in 1972.
