Aberystwyth in 1977, looking along the sweeping curve of the promenade with its long terrace of seafront hotels, lodging houses and commercial buildings backed by the green slopes of Constitution Hill. The scene captures the resort in a calm summer moment, with people spread across the beach, groynes projecting into Cardigan Bay, and the distinctive white pavilion-style seafront building and clock-fronted structure standing out on the right. The hillside above the town shows how tightly Aberystwyth was hemmed between sea and rising ground, while the funicular line of the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway can be picked out on Constitution Hill at the far left. This stretch of seafront had already been reshaped by storm damage and coastal defence works long before this photograph was taken, yet it still preserves the character of the Victorian and Edwardian resort that made Aberystwyth one of the best-known holiday towns in Wales.
