This authentic 1970s colour photograph, captured in 1975, documents the Usk Vale Works of Sargeant Bros Ltd located on Queen Street in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. The archival image features the substantial Victorian industrial building constructed of dark purple-grey stone with distinctive light brick detailing around the arched windows and roofline. A prominent hand-painted sign on the facade reads “ESTABLISHED 1870” and “SARGEANT BROS. LTD – USK VALE WORKS.” In the foreground, a woman in a turquoise coat carrying a red bag walks past the green wooden doors of the factory. By the time of this photograph, the company was a well-known local employer specialising in printing and bookbinding, a focus it maintained from the 1930s until its eventual closure in 1983. The site has since been demolished and replaced by the Cibi Walk shopping precinct, making this a rare visual record of the town’s industrial heritage before urban redevelopment.
