Portmeirion in 1985, looking across the Central Piazza with its formal pool, clipped lawns, flower beds, cypress-like trees and carefully arranged Italianate buildings set against dense woodland. The view is full of recognisable detail, including the domed Pantheon in the right foreground, the colonnaded Bristol Colonnade beyond the water, the tall white tower rising through the trees, and the ornamental steps, statues and benches that give this part of the village its staged, theatrical quality. The pale blue direction sign at left adds another useful period touch, while the bright planting and strolling visitors show Portmeirion exactly as it was meant to be seen: part garden, part fantasy village, and one of the most distinctive visitor attractions in North Wales.
