This 1979 photograph shows a customised Bedford CF van parked on a busy street in Newquay, Cornwall its blue paintwork, bonnet scoop, auxiliary Cibie lamps and private plate MHE 11 giving it a very distinctive late-1970s look. The van is seen outside a row of souvenir and seaside shops, with crowds on the pavement and a prominent life belt-style sign helping to place the scene firmly in a Cornish holiday resort. Details such as the roof-mounted Ventura top, decorative striping and “CF rules ok” sticker capture the era when Bedford CFs were often personalised for leisure use as much as work. More than a simple vehicle portrait, the image preserves the atmosphere of Newquay at the height of the summer season, with the customised van becoming part of the broader holiday-town street scene.
