This 1979 traffic view is packed with useful period vehicle detail, led by a blue Austin Allegro nearest the camera as it rounds the curve of a broad urban distributor road. Behind, is a blue Datsun pick-up carrying a tarpaulin-covered load, followed by a brown Ford Cortina estate, while behind them comes a green Leyland Terrier box lorry lettered for Steinway & Sons, Piano Makers, used for piano deliveries. Further back on the opposite side is another Cortina, adding to the distinctly late-1970s British road scene. The grassy embankments, tall lamp columns and sweeping modern alignment give the setting the feel of a recently built urban road, but it is the mix of everyday working vehicles, family cars and specialist delivery transport that makes the photograph especially valuable as a record of the period.
