This 1988 view shows a fleet of Royal Mail vans lined up in a depot yard, with a mix of Ford Escort and Morris Ital-based vans finished in the familiar red livery with yellow “Royal Mail” lettering, the EIIR cypher and the slogan “Please use the Postcode”. The repeated rows of near-identical vehicles give the photograph a strong fleet feel, though closer inspection shows the different front-end shapes and body styles of the two models. Mud splashes along the lower panels and the rough surface of the yard add a useful note of everyday working life, reminding us that these were hard-used delivery vehicles rather than showroom examples. More than just a study of postal vans, the image captures a very recognisable part of late-1980s Britain, when these compact Royal Mail fleet vehicles were a routine sight in towns, villages and city streets across the country.
