This 1973 photograph shows a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow at a forecourt in Banbury, almost certainly near the junction of Warwick Road and Foundry Street. The big light-blue saloon, registration LYY 154K, dominates the foreground with its unmistakable grille and quad headlamps, while the street behind captures an ordinary Oxfordshire town scene of the period, complete with mixed shopfronts, passing traffic and an AA sign offering “250 stamps if you join the AA here”. A particularly useful clue is the “Old Noah Antiques” shop in the background, which stood on the corner of Foundry Street and Warwick Road. More than just a portrait of a luxury car, the image sets a Rolls-Royce against the everyday bustle of Banbury in the early 1970s, making the contrast between prestige motoring and an ordinary market-town street all the more striking.
