Situated in the scenic village of Glendale on the Isle of Skye, the Glendale Watermill stands as a reminder of the island’s rich agricultural past. Built in the 19th century, the mill played a crucial role in the local community by grinding grain for the surrounding crofting farms.
In the 1970s, the watermill was carefully restored, featuring the installation of a unique hand-crafted overshot water wheel—the only one of its kind in Scotland. This restoration attracted significant attention, drawing over 16,000 visitors in its first year. Unfortunately, years of decline led to the collapse of the original thatched roof in 2009. The mill was subsequently fitted with a metal roof, and the original milling machinery was removed.
Today, while no longer operational, the Glendale Watermill remains an important historic site maintained by the Glendale Estate. Its picturesque setting and historical significance continue to make it a noteworthy attraction for visitors exploring the Isle of Skye.
