Derry Lodge, Ballater 1960s

Deep within the heart of the Cairngorms, surrounded by ancient Scots pinewoods and mountain streams, stands the remote and atmospheric Derry Lodge. Located around four miles (6.5 km) from the Linn of Dee near Braemar, this now-disused building is a striking reminder of Scotland’s Victorian sporting estate era.

Built in the late 19th century as one of several shooting lodges on the expansive Mar Lodge Estate, Derry Lodge once offered a comfortable base for deer-stalking parties venturing into the rugged hills. Its U-shaped stone structure, nestled at the junction of the Derry and Luibeg burns, reflects the rustic elegance of its time.

The lodge has seen many uses over the decades. During the Second World War, it was requisitioned by the military, and was then leased by the Cairngorm Club as a shelter for hillwalkers. Though repairs were made during this period—including the replacement of a corrugated iron scullery—rising maintenance costs ultimately forced the club to relinquish the lease. Since then, Derry Lodge has remained unoccupied, gradually falling into disrepair.

In 1995, the Mar Lodge Estate was acquired by the National Trust for Scotland, which has since carried out works to keep Derry Lodge wind- and water-tight. Listed as a Category C building, it is protected from demolition, and plans have been drawn up in recent years to restore it as a basic hostel for walkers and cyclists. A 2016 proposal envisioned a 20-bed self-catering facility that would preserve the building’s character while giving it new life as a low-impact mountain refuge.
