A 1950s colour photo of the Queens Building at Heathrow Airport, London, taken from the latter half of the 20th century. The red-brick building features its name in large white lettering and serves as a backdrop to a busy terminal forecourt filled with classic British vehicles. In the foreground, a black Austin FX3 taxi and a white Ford Consul are parked near a small “London Transport” kiosk, while a large BEA (British European Airways) coach is visible to the left. The scene captures the elegant, early days of commercial aviation at the airport, with traditional lampposts and flags flying from the rooftop of the modernist terminal structure.
Today, the Queens Building no longer stands, having been demolished in 2009 to make way for the massive Terminal 2 (The Queen’s Terminal) development project. During its heyday, it was a popular spot for plane spotters and featured a famous rooftop garden and observation deck. The vintage London taxis and BEA buses seen here have long since been replaced by modern hybrid cabs and automated transport links.
