Pan Am Boeing 747 Clipper Maid of the Seas at Heathrow Airport in 1986, shown taxiing past the terminal buildings in the airline’s classic blue-and-white livery. The aircraft, registered N739PA, carries the large Pan Am globe tail logo and “Clipper Maid of the Seas” name near the nose, with other international jets visible around the airport in the background. This color photograph captures Heathrow during the wide-body jet era of the 1980s, when Pan Am’s Boeing 747s were a familiar sight on transatlantic routes between London and the United States. The aircraft later became tragically known as the plane destroyed in the Lockerbie bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in December 1988, giving this otherwise routine airport scene added historical significance.
