A 1960s colour photo of Windsor and Eton, Berkshire, taken from the window of an aircraft in 1969. The aerial perspective provides a stunning view of the River Thames winding through the landscape, with the historic Windsor Bridge connecting the town of Windsor to Eton. The iconic buildings of Eton College are visible among the lush greenery to the north, while the dense Victorian and medieval street layouts of Windsor cluster around the riverbank. In the background, the rolling English countryside stretches toward the horizon, punctuated by the expanding post-war residential developments of the Thames Valley.
Today, this historic vista remains remarkably preserved due to the heritage status of Windsor Castle and Eton College. While the fundamental layout of the streets and the river remains unchanged, the surrounding areas have seen significant modernisation and infill development. Windsor Bridge was closed to motorised traffic in 1970, just a year after this photo was taken, and is now a pedestrian-only crossing. The greenery seen in 1969 continues to be protected as part of the Crown Estate and local conservation areas.
