A 1970s colour photo of the busy check-in area at Terminal 3, Heathrow Airport in 1973. The terminal’s distinctive interior architecture is on full display, featuring large, perforated globe-shaped lighting fixtures and a mezzanine level housing a “Post Office” and “Hairdressing” salon. Dozens of travelers are seen with heavy, non-wheeled suitcases on metal trolleys, navigating the marble-patterned flooring of one of the world’s busiest international hubs.
Today, Terminal 3 has been completely redesigned to handle significantly higher passenger volumes, with the nostalgic 1970s decor and specialized services like the mezzanine hairdressing salon long since replaced by modern duty-free shopping and digital check-in kiosks. BOAC merged with BEA in 1974 to form British Airways, making this image a rare look at the corporation’s final year of independent branding. The iconic globe lights and open-plan check-in desks have been superseded by contemporary lighting and automated baggage drop systems.
