This vintage colour photograph shows a busy apron scene at Gatwick Airport in 1971, viewed from the elevated terminal walkway looking across the charter stands. In the foreground left is a BEA Airtours aircraft, likely a Hawker Siddeley Trident in the airline’s short-lived charter livery, surrounded by fuel bowsers and ground service vehicles. Behind it stands a Società Aerea Mediterranea (SAM) jet, probably a Douglas DC-8, reflecting Gatwick’s role as a major hub for European charter traffic in the early 1970s.
Further back on the apron is a Wardair Canada Boeing 707, identifiable by its white fuselage and red tail markings, while to the right a Caledonian/BUA aircraft—most likely a BAC One-Eleven or early Boeing 707/720 variant—is parked on a parallel stand. The mix of British, European, and North American operators, along with open apron operations and rooftop passenger walkways, captures Gatwick at the height of its jet-age charter boom.
