This authentic 1960s color photograph, captured in 1962, documents the International Fountain at the Seattle World’s Fair (also known as the Century 21 Exposition) in Seattle, Washington. The archival image features the original design of the fountain, which sits in a large concrete basin filled with white stones. Water jets spray in a programmed pattern from a bronze, spiked dome reminiscent of a space-age sea urchin. In the background, the Skyride aerial gondolas (purple and red cars) are seen suspended from high-tension wires, traveling toward a tall red support tower. The fair’s modernist architecture is visible throughout the mid-century landscape, including the vaulted white arches of the United States Science Pavilion (now the Pacific Science Center) and various international exhibition halls. The International Fountain underwent a complete reconstruction in 1995, replacing the spiked dome with a smoother, silver hemisphere. This factual record captures the optimistic, “Space Age” aesthetic of the Pacific Northwest’s landmark event during the early sixties.
