This authentic 1970s color photograph, captured in 1974, documents the opulent interior of the Americana Hotel in Bal Harbour, Florida. The archival image showcases the grand lobby’s unique artistic features, most notably the towering vertical mosaics depicting historical figures such as conquistadors and indigenous leaders. Guests are seen relaxing in period-correct bright orange lounge chairs on a polished stone floor, while a sign for a buffet lunch and the entrance to the legendary “Bal Masque” supper club and “The Medallion Room” are visible in the background. Designed by architect Morris Lapidus and opened in 1956, the Americana was a masterpiece of Miami Modern (MiMo) architecture, known for its flamboyant style and the iconic terrarium in its center. In 1980, the hotel became the Sheraton Bal Harbour. Despite its historical significance, the building was demolished in 2007 to make way for the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort. This factual record preserves the sophisticated and eclectic interior design that made the Americana a premier destination for celebrities and socialites during the mid-seventies.
