A closer look at the Unisphere, the 12-story stainless-steel symbol of the fair and of the Space Age optimism of the era. Surrounded by rings representing the orbits of early satellites, it stood at the heart of the fairgrounds and was encircled by fountains that shot water upward in rhythmic timed sequences—cool relief on a hot Queens afternoon.
The structure was commissioned by U.S. Steel and designed by landscape architect Gilmore Clarke. It was intended to represent global unity under the fair’s theme: “Peace Through Understanding.”
The Unisphere survives today as the most recognizable remnant of the fair and remains a beloved landmark of Flushing Meadows–Corona Park—still surrounded by fountains, still shimmering in the sun, and still looming large in the memories of millions.
