Sinclair Oil drew huge crowds with its outdoor dinosaur exhibit, featuring nine life-size fiberglass models arranged in a landscaped garden in the Transportation Area. The company had been using dinosaurs in advertising since the 1930s, but this was the first time full-scale replicas were presented to the public. Their arrival made headlines—Sinclair proudly announced it was “the first time in 70 million years a herd of dinosaurs traveled down the Hudson River,” referring to the barge that delivered them to the fairgrounds.
More than 10 million visitors passed through the free exhibit, making it one of the fair’s most popular attractions, especially with children. After the fair closed, the dinosaurs toured the United States, stopping in more than 25 states and continuing to draw large crowds. When the tour ended, the models were donated to museums across the country—remarkably, all are believed to survive except one, which disappeared and was presumably stolen. The dinosaur seen perched on the roof in this photo is now on display at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, Texas.
The site has changed significantly since 1965. Today, this area forms part of the Queens Zoo, with the Sea Lion Store & Café sitting roughly where Sinclair’s prehistoric garden once stood
