A view down the Court of the Nations toward the centerpiece of the fair — the Unisphere — with the bronze sculpture Freedom of the Human Spirit in the foreground. Created by artist Marshall Fredericks, the statue depicts two soaring figures accompanied by stylized swans, symbolizing human aspiration and the triumph of spirit over struggle.
The Unisphere, towering at 140 feet tall, served as the official symbol of the 1964/65 Fair and represented “Peace Through Understanding.” Surrounded by a ring of fountains, it became one of the most photographed landmarks of the event.
Both the Unisphere and the Freedom of the Human Spirit survive today, though the statue has since been relocated slightly closer to the Unisphere within Flushing Meadows–Corona Park.
