The Lunar Fountain was one of the smaller but memorable water features at the fair, designed as a simple circular basin with vertical jets that created a clean, modern effect suited to the fair’s space-age themes. Set within landscaped paths and open views of nearby pavilions, it served as a quiet place for visitors to rest while still remaining in the heart of the activity.
After the fair ended and most of the grounds were cleared or redeveloped, the fountain was removed. The space didn’t remain empty for long — in 1967 a statue of George Washington was installed at the centre of the former basin, surrounded by a ring of open grass. Though nothing of the fountain remains today, the circular footprint still echoes its original form, making it one of the subtle but lingering traces of the 1964–65 fair within Flushing Meadows–Corona Park.
