Seen here beside the pavilion’s reflecting pool is one of its more whimsical attractions: the rotating Appliance Ferris Wheel. In 1964, this 15-foot-tall display originally showcased modern gas-powered home appliances — stoves, dryers, refrigerators and kitchen technology — mounted like exhibits on a carnival ride, slowly turning so visitors could view each item.

By the Fair’s second season in 1965, the display appears to have been re-imagined with a more playful approach. Instead of strictly showcasing appliances, the wheel now features a collection of chrome-finished, abstract objects and figures — giving the installation a more artistic, almost futuristic personality. This change likely reflected an effort to make the exhibit more visually engaging, especially since many visitors already owned or recognized the products featured in the first year.
