A Fiat 124 heads up the rugged gravel stretch of the Mt. Washington Auto Road, one of the oldest and most famous mountain roads in the United States. First opened to horse-drawn carriages in 1861, the road climbs 7.6 miles to the summit of Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the Northeast at 6,288 ft (1,917 m).
For many travelers of the 1960s and 70s, driving this narrow and guardrail-free route became a rite of passage—equal parts scenic wonder and white-knuckle adventure. The weather at the summit is notoriously unpredictable; Mount Washington once held the world record for the highest wind speed ever recorded at ground level: 231 mph (372 km/h) in 1934.
Today the road remains a major attraction, now fully paved and supported by shuttle vans and guided tours. But this photo captures an earlier era—when families packed into sedans, station wagons, and muscle cars to conquer New England’s most dramatic mountain ascent armed with nothing more than a map, a camera, and plenty of courage.
