Visitors in the early 1970s would have seen Mount Rushmore much like this—framed by the dense pines of the Black Hills and still surrounded by the rubble left from the carving process. The monument, featuring the 60-foot faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, was sculpted between 1927 and 1941 under the direction of Gutzon Borglum and later his son Lincoln Borglum. Intended to celebrate American history and national identity, the project required over 400 workers who used dynamite and fine hand-finishing to shape the granite.
By 1970, Mount Rushmore was already a major tourist attraction, drawing millions of visitors each year—many arriving via the newly improved highway system and parking at facilities far simpler than today’s expanded visitor center. The scene captures a quieter, earlier era of American road-trip tourism, before the monument became the global icon and heavily developed destination it is now.
