You’re looking at the Loew’s Grand Theatre on Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, Georgia, photographed in 1976. The marquee is advertising the film No Way Back starring Fred Williamson, which fits with the mid-1970s timeframe and the era’s Blaxploitation popularity.
About Loew’s Grand Theatre
Loew’s Grand wasn’t just any cinema — it was famous worldwide because:
⭐ It hosted the world premiere of Gone With the Wind on December 15, 1939.
Atlanta treated the event like a civic celebration, with parades, banners, and thousands lining Peachtree Street. Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Olivia de Havilland, and author Margaret Mitchell attended (hence the nearby street sign: Margaret Mitchell Sq. seen in your photo).
The theatre originally opened in 1893 as the DeGive’s Grand Opera House, and later became part of the Loew’s cinema chain.
The Area in the Photo
The details give a perfect slice of downtown 1970s Atlanta:
-
Margaret Mitchell Square street sign in the foreground
-
Rows of newspaper vending machines (Atlanta Journal & Constitution era)
-
Neighboring businesses: Gregg’s Pizza, Henry Grady Beauty Shop, Maxim Fashions
-
Classic 1970s storefront signage and architecture
It’s a moment frozen in time before redevelopment changed the area dramatically.
What Happened Later
The theatre’s story took a dramatic turn:
-
On January 30, 1978, just two years after this photo, a mysterious fire badly damaged the building.
-
Officially the blaze was attributed to electrical failure — but many Atlantans suspected arson, as the land was already planned for redevelopment.
-
The remains were demolished later in 1978.
Today, the site is occupied by the Marriott Marquis Hotel, completed in 1985.
