When the Granada Studios Tour opened in Manchester in 1988, it offered something no other British attraction could match: a chance to step directly into the world of television. Built within the working Granada Television complex, the tour combined behind-the-scenes insight with the thrill of walking through real sets – none more iconic than Coronation Street.
Visitors began with a guided journey through production galleries, soundstages, and special effects areas, learning how shows were filmed, lit, and edited. But the highlight was always the outdoor Coronation Street set. For the first time, the public could wander along the famous cobbles, peer at the façades of the Rovers Return, the Corner Shop and the terraced houses, and stand where decades of storylines had unfolded. Although the buildings were largely shells, the atmosphere was unmistakable, thanks to attention to detail and the tour’s clever use of props and sound.
The attraction grew into one of Manchester’s most popular tourist draws, expanding with themed rides, interactive exhibits and seasonal events. At its peak in the early 1990s, it welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
However, changing production needs and the redevelopment of the Granada site gradually limited what could be shown to the public. The tour finally closed in 1999, though the old Coronation Street set remained in use until filming moved to a new, larger location at MediaCityUK in 2013.
