The Rapids Ride at Alton Towers in 1986, photographed just a few weeks after opening, with one of the circular rafts emerging along the newly built concrete channel below the broad waterfall section. The rawness of the setting is especially striking, from the bare embankments and fresh rock edging to the sparse planting that had not yet had time to mature, giving a clear sense of how new the attraction still was. This early view also shows the ride’s engineered layout particularly well, with the channel, spillway and surrounding lake all still looking stark against the winter landscape beyond. It is a valuable record of the Rapids in their first weeks of operation, before later landscaping softened the area and the ride became a more established part of Alton Towers.
